The UT Libraries’ strategic vision celebrates a commitment to “providing high-quality educational opportunities for people at every stage of life, whenever and wherever they seek to learn.” The Libraries’ online learning offerings advance this commitment.

The library tutorials website (libguides.utk.edu/tutorials) gives students accessible interactive resources to learn about UT Libraries, research skills, databases, and related topics. Inspired by classic 8-bit video games, Jargon Blaster helps students learn library terminology while playing as UT’s beloved mascot, Smokey. The tutorial game leads Smokey through Knoxville landmarks such as the Sunsphere, making it a great online introduction for those new to the city. Another tutorial, Using UT Libraries: A Volunteer Experience, allows learners to virtually explore Hodges, Pendergrass, and DeVine Libraries as well as the Libraries’ online presence. Other learning resources focus on research skills such as developing a topic, understanding primary and secondary sources, and source evaluation.

These resources are easily incorporated into Canvas, the university’s course management portal through which students access course materials and submit assignments, and they can be used by individual students as well as entire classes. To make it easy for students to access these and other library offerings, a Resources at UT Libraries page is accessible from the default Canvas navigation bar for all courses.

Jargon Blaster is among numerous games, videos, and interactive tutorials that can help students learn library research skills.
